School Leader, KIPP Academy West
Steve Khadam-Hir is honored to be the founding school leader of KIPP Academy West. KAW currently serves 108 5th graders and will grow to serve over 420 students in grades 5 through 8. Prior to founding KAW, Steve spent a year planning to open and found KIPP Academy West as a Fisher Fellow with the KIPP Foundation. Steve began his teaching career in Houston as a 2006 Teach For America corps member teaching fourth- and fifth-grade science at Tinsley Elementary in Southwest Houston. In 2008, he joined the KIPP team and family as the 5th grade science teacher at KIPP 3D Academy. With a strong admiration for the KIPP culture and academic results, Steve wanted to expand his impact and therefore took on leadership roles including Saturday school coordinator, grade level chair, assistant principal, and Miles Family Fellow at KIPP 3D Academy. In 2011, Steve transitioned to Houston’s East End as KIPP Intrepid’s Assistant Principal and the following summer participated in the KSLP Principal Prep Program. He then served as the principal of KIPP Intrepid Preparatory School 2012-2014.
Steve has a double major in political science and economics from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He also earned his Master of Business Administration at the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business and participated in the second cohort of REEP (Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program) where he earned his Principal’s Certification. Outside of education, Steve loves road trips, cooking, running with his wife and playing with/reading to his sons.
Steve is motivated by the power of relationships and team and family. He believes any student, no matter their background or experiences, can and will go to and through college.
