The Urban Education Experience

Please note: The last application deadline for the Urban Ed Experience has passed. If you applied for the final deadline, you will be notified within two weeks of your application if you are continuing our selection process.

The KIPP Houston Urban Education Experience is designed for current college students or 2012 graduates who have a passion for urban education and education reform. Participants will spend 14 days in a KIPP Houston primary or middle school working with students and getting an inside look into how a high-performing charter school works.

Program Overview

  • Participants will work 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12th through June 29th. Those who would like to work past 2 p.m. may do so, but this is not a requirement. The Urban Education Experience is unpaid.
  • Urban Ed Experience will kick off June 12th with an orientation day for all participants. Participants will begin working at their placement school on June 13th.
  • Each Urban Ed Experience participant will have a mentor teacher who will be responsible for providing daily schedules, assigning duties, and mentoring him/her.
  • Each participant’s experience will vary slightly, but a typical day could include the following: one-on-one tutoring; assisting the teacher during a lesson; analyzing student assessments; leading a guided reading group; and assisting in the office with registration, scheduling, or other tasks. Our goal is that at least 60% of the work day involves interacting directly with students and teachers.

Program Benefits

  •  Participants will receive an inside look into successful schools in an urban setting, while also receiving hands-on experience with students.
  • High-performing participants may use their mentor teacher as a reference for future employment.
  • Participants will have their “foot in the door” for future opportunities with KIPP Houston.
  • Given the short work day and end date of June 29th, participants may participate in other opportunities and employment.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to network with teachers and other Urban Ed Experience participants.
