Academics

Overview

At KIPP SHINE Prep, students gain a strong foundation in English and Spanish literacy, math, science, social studies, and the arts. Their exploration of these subjects is a direct reflection of the five core values of SHINE: children Seeking knowledge through exploration; Honoring each other and themselves through sharing stories in the excitement of learning; using their Imaginations to create stories and paint pictures as part of the growth process; Never giving up as they build confidence daily; and Every day, since this is a consistent commitment.

Every academic day is a reflection of our mission; KIPP SHINE Prep nurtures and strengthens our students' creativity, knowledge, character, and thinking skills, preparing them to excel academically, physically, socially, and spiritually in the nation's finest secondary schools, colleges, and in life.

Our PreK3 program has three classrooms, each with a lead teacher. One classroom is supported by a teaching fellow while the other two are supported by an additional teacher from the Head Start Program. Our AM cohort attends school from 7:25 am - 11:05 am and our PM cohort attends school from 12:05 pm - 3:45 pm. Students are exposed to our Spanish program daily within their classrooms.

The PreK 3 program integrates the KIPP philosophy with the best early childhood theories and programs. Children are taught literacy, math, science, and character development within the five seasons and represent their learning through artwork, dramatic presentations, music and movement. The five seasons are: I Can Go to School, Me in the World, Shapes of the Universe, Animals of the World, and Farms, Grocery Stores, and Restaurants.

Our PreK4 program has four classrooms. Our AM cohort attends school from 7:25 am - 11:05 am, and our PM cohort attends school from 12:05 pm - 3:45 pm.

Each grade level, from Kindergarten through fourth grade, has five classrooms. Students attend Spanish class for 90 minutes a day. They also attend excellence classes five days a week (see section on Excellence Program for more details). Students also visit the library on a weekly basis.

English Language

KIPP SHINE Prep utilizes a balanced literacy program to meet the needs of all students with research-based best practices. This involves the use of a range of materials including The Letter People (PreK3), DLM Early Childhood Express (PreK4), and Journeys (Kinder - fourth grade).

All grade levels implement common unit plans in reading, based on student needs and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Math

KIPP SHINE Prep uses the Everyday Math program in grades PreK4 – fourth grade. Everyday Math focuses on developing number sense as well strengthening students' skills in geometry, patterning, measurement, data collection and logical reasoning. Students receive math instruction both in whole group and in small groups throughout the week

Science

KIPP SHINE Prep uses the FOSS Science Program to guide science instruction. This inquiry-based science instruction provides students with a foundation in scientific methods and concepts.

Social Studies

All grade levels implement shared unit plans that are developed in alignment with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for social studies. Teachers utilize a range of materials to support learning in social studies, including the Urban Education Exchange, authentic literature and experiential learning through field trips and special activities.

Spanish Language Program

At KIPP SHINE Prep all of our students receive Spanish language instruction, beginning with the PreK3 program all the way to the fourth Grade. Our Spanish program is designed to develop the students' communication skills so that they are able to read, write, and speak comfortably in the secondary language. In addition, our Spanish teachers supplement English instruction by integrating grade-level themes, objectives, and concepts as well as the school's core values into their lessons. All grade levels conduct on-going assessments that drive Spanish literacy instruction.

Learn more.

The Spanish program is structured as follows: there are three PreK3 classrooms, each one having a full-day Spanish-speaking instructor, while in the remaining grade levels, PreK4 to fourth grade, students from five different classrooms transition to a separate class for Spanish language arts instruction. They attend Spanish class in two distinct learning blocks. One Spanish block is designed for whole group instruction with a lead teacher, while the second block is designed for small group learning with a lead teacher and teaching fellow. The key component of the Spanish program is that students receive instruction solely in the secondary language, and our teachers provide support through visual aids, dramatizations, songs, chants and poems.

PreK3

In PreK3 our students receive Spanish instruction in a 15-20 minute block every day as a gradual introduction to the secondary language. Through a combination of whole group lessons, play exploration and social interactions, our students learn to communicate using basic Spanish vocabulary, which include names of colors, shapes, numbers and letters.

PreK4

In PreK4 our students attend Spanish class once daily. During whole group instruction, students focus on learning the days and months of the year, individual letter names and sounds of the Spanish alphabet, numbers, basic shapes, and colors. Small group instruction combines learning centers and read-alouds as well as reading, writing, and phonemic awareness activities that reinforce the skills and objectives taught during whole group lessons. Each learning block provides our students with the opportunity to develop their language skills both in listening and speaking.

Curricula: Estrellita and Canta y Deletrea

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten our students receive Spanish instruction in two 40-minute blocks. Whole group instruction consists of reviewing calendar concepts, identifying numbers, letter names and sounds, and introducing students to the syllable of the week. The lead teacher and teaching fellow utilize the small group learning block to conduct guided reading and writing activities and to develop the students' comprehension skills.

Curricula: Juguemos a Leer, Estrellita, Scholastic's Solares: Kindergarten, and Rigby's Colección PM

First Grade

In first grade SHINEsters attend Spanish class in two 45-minute blocks. The whole group instructional block is an opportunity to review skills taught in previous lessons and reinforce key calendar and mathematical concepts, syllables, and high frequency words. In addition teachers utilize this learning block to introduce new concepts, vocabulary and consonant blend of the week. During small group instruction our students work in guided reading and writing groups. While in their guided reading groups, they learn skills that will help them improve their reading fluency and comprehension, while the writing groups focus on different components of Spanish grammar.

Curricula: combination of Scott Foresman's Lectura and Rigby's Colección PM

Second Grade

In second grade, our students' Spanish instruction occurs in two 45-minute blocks. Whole group instructional time consists of read-alouds, shared reading time, journal and guided writing, and is an opportunity to review previously taught skills. This learning block also serves as an opportunity to teach new concepts in both grammar and mathematics. Small group instruction by a lead teacher and teaching fellow consists of working in guided reading and writing groups. While in guided reading groups, students learn to develop skills that will help them increase their reading fluency and comprehension. Guided writing groups are dedicated to teaching students how to write for a variety of audiences. Both learning blocks allow students to express themselves with greater ease, not only through conversations, but also through their reading and writing.

Curricula: Combination of Scholastic's Solares: Segundo grado, Scott Foresman's Escritura y Gramática (Grade 2), and Rigby's Colección PM

Third Grade

Third grade Spanish instruction occurs in two 45-minute blocks. The two instructional blocks are divided up into small and whole group learning. Whole group learning consists of read-alouds, shared reading time, journal and guided writing, as well as an introduction and review of concepts related to grammar and mathematics. Small group instruction by a lead teacher and teaching fellow focuses on developing specific reading and comprehension skills.

Curricula: Scott Foresman's Lectura, Houghton Mifflin's Lenguaje: Gramática y Composición and Rigby's Colección PM

Fourth Grade

In fourth grade, our students receive daily Spanish instruction during one 90-minute learning block. The instructional time is divided up into small and whole group learning. Whole group learning consists of read-alouds, shared reading time, journal and guided writing, as well as an introduction and review of concepts related to grammar and mathematics. Small group instruction is led by a lead teacher and teaching fellow and focuses on developing specific reading and comprehension skills.

Curricula and assessment: Scott Foresman Reading and Language Arts; IDEL and EDL2 to measure the students' fluency

Art

The art program at SHINE aims to encompass many aspects of the students' experience into one safe, project-based creative environment.  Learn More.

Students are encouraged to let their imagination soar within the framework of gaining knowledge of art history, cultural studies, techniques of the masters, manipulation of tools, and creative personal expression. Each month, the students tackle an artist of focus, studying his/her genuine approach to art within the context of a theme. Themes for the Smartest Artists consist of the Principles of Art - line, shape, color, value, texture and form. Smartest Artists also master the Elements of Design - balance, contrast, emphasis, abstraction, realism, movement, and repetition. Students are assessed on the acquisition of vocabulary and their understanding of how the techniques can fit into their own articulation, completing the circle from study to trial and error experimentation to successful multi-faceted expression.

Physical Education

The physical education program at SHINE provides students with the knowledge and skills they need in order to lay the foundation for continued social development through physical activity and access to a physically-active lifestyle. Learn More.

SHINEsters are taught about the relationship between physical activity and health throughout their lifespan. They are taught skills in various sports from soccer, basketball and baseball to dodgeball, frisbee and volleyball. Emphasis is placed on hard work and living the SHINE value of never give up, seeking ways to improve, learning from mistakes and having fun!

Soccer

The soccer program at SHINE, which is focused on Kindergarten through fourth grade, is a unique venture that accomplishes many goals. Learn More.

Our program reinforces the distinctive values education component at SHINE. We emphasize love for fellow competitors, the appreciation of all cultures, imaginative problem solving, and the alignmen of individual interests with the team goals that bring us together on the soccer field.

In a fun, challenging environment, students build their confidence and self-esteem as they develop their individual skills. This is achieved through a combination of movement education, ball-handling and small sided games.

With young players, a focus on winning and losing undermines much more important objectives. We prioritize playing well, competing with fairness and intensity, and enjoying the experience. To truly appreciate their soccer experience, players must demonstrate honor for the game, its authority figures, teammates, and opponents. Students who can achieve these more important goals will have a very rewarding experience. We teach players to leave the field with grace and pride. Whether they win, lose, or draw, SHINE students gain life experience that will be valuable as they climb the mountain to, through, and beyond college.

Technology

Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, all SHINEsters in Kindergarten through fourth grade will have an opportunity to attend SHINE's newest excellence class focused on technology. The content for this class will be directly aligned with the TEKS for technology.

Culture

Mission

KIPP SHINE Prep nurtures and strengthens our students' creativity, knowledge, character, and thinking skills preparing them to excel academically, physically, socially, and spiritually in the nation's finest secondary schools, colleges, and in life.

Values

KIPP SHINE Prep is rooted in the principles that spell its name: Seek, Honor, Imagine, Never give up, Every day.

KIPP Children

Learn More.

As a school community, the students will:

Seek: knowledge, teachers, experience, opportunity, unity, and success; new places, friends, and things;

Honor: themselves, work, classmates, teachers, parents, school, community, their culture, country, the world, and fellow human beings in everything they do;

Imagine: new ideas, through play, beauty everywhere, a better world, solutions to the most challenging problems, themselves in college, and the future of their dreams;

Never give up: on themselves, their work, teammates, the team, teachers, the school, their parents, the community, world and fellow human beings – especially when the going gets tough; and

Every day: Learn, Love, Respect, Create, Support, Communicate, Listen, Speak, Play, Imagine, Grow, Rest, Think, Laugh, Smile, and SHINE.

Except for Every Day, which encompasses our approach to building our community, the values are actions. Actions are constant, active, driven, and powerful. They are the heart of the school, and as long as they beat true and consistently, the school grows and the students SHINE.

SHINE On Friday

Each Friday, under the leadership of SHINE's Values Chairs, students convene as a grade level team or school to celebrate each other's success and deepen their understanding of the values of SHINE.

Through role plays, discussion and songs, students connect their values to their content knowledge and celebrate the SHINEsters of the week who have been living the values through their words and their actions. SHINE On Friday provides the opportunity for faculty and students to come together as a family and remember the "why" behind our daily routines. It is truly a highlight of the week for our students and staff.

Values Lessons

Each day, the PreK3 teachers at SHINE use selected works of literature to introduce their students to the school's core values, while the focus in PreK4 through 4th grade lies primarily in reinforcing them and helping students make connections between the school's values and real world experiences. When students begin to reflect on the values in literature and in action, they begin to internalize what it means to SHINE, a process that builds and strengthens as the students progress through the school and beyond.

Values Team Initiatives

At SHINE, we believe that happiness and joy are necessary and contagious. Our students can only be as happy as our faculty and as such, the Values Team at SHINE works hard to promote a sense of joy, fun, collaboration, balance, and fulfillment into our daily work.

These initiatives include:

  • Fun icebreakers for professional development sessions
  • Gratitude Grams
  • Faculty back-to-school social
  • Potluck lunches
  • Secret Snowflake
  • Faculty holiday parties
  • Birthday door decorations
  • Team outings
  • Team building activities
  • Inspirational staff bulletin boards

Each of these initiatives plays a vital part in both boosting and maintaining faculty morale. They help us to truly function as one team and one family.

Family Literacy

KIPP SHINE Prep depends on strong commitments from students, their families, and teachers. This commitment also includes literacy and arts workshops for parents and guardians of all students to better support their children in their school experience and at home.

Families of children in PreK3 are introduced to the school's core values—SEEK, HONOR, IMAGINE, NEVER GIVE UP, and EVERY DAY—through similar workshops known as Imagine the Possibilities. Teachers and families work closely together to help develop the children's basic understanding of literacy and mathematics skills. These mandatory workshops —offered several times throughout the year on two different days and times to accommodate different family schedules—help ensure a strong connection between what is happening at school and what is happening at home to support the development of each child.
