Meet Frank Cush, as he talks about his vision for Explore at our Teacher Orientation.

Academics

At KIPP Explore Academy, we realize the importance of keeping students engaged in the learning process, as well as differentiating for each individual student's academic needs. The school is data driven and administers frequent student-friendly formative assessments to help inform and drive instructional decisions. During the math and literacy blocks, student learning occurs in a small group setting, which allows teachers to meet specific individual needs. Two teachers are always present during this small group instruction time.

In addition to literacy and math, Explore is a science and technology focused school. All students have the opportunity to interact with science and technology on a daily basis. We believe in maximizing the opportunity to tap into the natural curiosity of students when learning about the world around them. Students participate in lab experiences weekly and enjoy the hands-on approach of our science curriculum. Rather than waiting until later primary grades, but prioritizing science instruction at a younger grade level, students are more inclined to enjoy and embrace science. Explorers also interact with computers on a daily basis. In addition to teaching the students how to use a computer, Explore is committed to exposing its students to the many functions of a computer. By the end of fourth grade, Explorers will not only have a strong command over all Microsoft Office applications, they will also have the ability to build internet sites, interact with different types of media, and utilize the computer as a tool to enhance their learning experiences.

Lastly, Explore believes in the value of a dual-language immersion approach for all students to learn Spanish. All students are provided with daily Spanish instruction and are encouraged to embrace a second (or even third!) language. While the program begins by focusing on building conversational skills and vocabulary throughout the earlier grade levels, students will learn how to read and write in Spanish as well.

Culture

Mission

We will do whatever it takes to provide a world-class education that develops the knowledge, character, and critical thinking skills necessary for our students to excel physically, academically, and socially on their journey to and through college and in the competitive world beyond.

Values

KIPP Explore's values are built upon an acronym that spells the word BRIGHT (Believe, Reach, Imagine, Give, Honor, and Trust). Our students are encouraged to live and model the BRIGHT values each and every day. Explorers know that their actions always speak louder than their words.

Believe (hope and spirituality)
... in yourself, your future, and your dreams
... in your talents and skills
... in your teachers
... that anything is possible when you put your mind to it
... that success is not pre-determined and is attainable through hard work, dedication, and persistence (REACH)
... that you know the answer, or that you can find one
... that your education gives you power in the world
... that no task is too difficult
... that no goal is ever too lofty
... in your team and family at Explore
... that just because something has never been done, doesn't mean it cannot be done

Reach (fortitude, courage, diligence, persistence, and desire)
... beyond your comfort zone
... beyond your talents, strengths and skills

Push harder when things gets harder.
Hard work is the key ingredient to success.
Be brave.
Never give up.
Impossible is nothing.

Imagine (creativity, resourcefulness, and tolerance)
... there are no limits
... solutions
... college
... a better world and a better way

Always go beyond the limits of reality.
Proudly show your own creativity.
Solve problems by thinking outside of the box.

Give (generosity, friendship, and courtesy)
... to your teammates, your school, your parents, your teachers, and your community
... back to those that have helped you in the past
... and ask nothing in return
... your knowledge, talents, and advice
... your undivided attention
... to those who have less than you
... even when you don't want to
... more than others think is practical or wise

Find the beauty in doing for others.
Be humble and ask others to give a helping hand when you need it.

Honor (respect, kindness, and integrity)
... your teammates, teachers, parents, school, and your community
... your materials, time, and the ideas of others
... all living things, yourself, your brain, and the world around you
... everyone you come into contact with – regardless of whether or not that person has something to offer you

Trust (loyalty, prudence, and responsibility)
Build relationships with others.
Trust those around you.
Work hard to gain the trust of others.
Act on your beliefs and have integrity.
Always do what's right, even if no one is watching (especially when no one is watching).

Act on what you believe because it is your code.
Always know the difference between right and wrong and actively choose what's right.
