Teacher Profiles

Ever wondered what it’s like to work at KIPP? Watch these videos of our teachers explaining why they chose KIPP, what makes KIPP different, and what they enjoy most about being a big KIPPster.

Deonna Garrett, seventh grade English Language Arts teacher at KIPP Spirit, joined KIPP in 2005 after leaving New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Deonna was a founding teacher at KIPP Houston’s “New Orleans West” (NOW) for students from New Orleans. She’s been at KIPP ever since and won the 2010 Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award. Deonna, a Teach for America alumna, earned her Bachelors of Arts in Communication at Illinois State University and is now in her sixth year of teaching. Click here to view the video.
Marlo Diosomito, who is now in his 18th year of teaching, joined the KIPP Houston High School faculty in 2006 because the school’s educational philosophy aligned with his personal beliefs. Marlo earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines and his Masters of Chemistry from Mindanao State University. He was named the HEB Teacher of the Year regional winner and state finalist in 2010; he won the Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011. Marlo teaches Pre-AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Science and Entrepreneurship, in addition to being the science department chair and mentor to the Infinity Club. Click here to view the video
