Alumni Spotlight: Dolores Lozano

We know that diversity is a source of strength, and in our schools, where nearly 70% of students identify as Hispanic/Latine, it is vital that our students learn from, and are inspired by, Hispanic educators and role models who help shape their community.

We want to introduce our KIPPsters to Dolores Lozano, a KIPP Texas and KIPP 3D Academy Alumna, a KIPP Texas board member, and the first Latina to serve as Harris County Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2, Place 2.

Tell us a little bit about your background in education. How long have you been with KIPP Texas Public Schools?

My name is Dolores Lozano, and I am a first-generation college graduate, KIPP Texas alumna, and KIPP Texas Board Member. I attended Baylor University, and I’ve been part of the KIPP Team & Family since 5th grade, which makes 20+years as a KIPPster. Over the years, I have advocated for education reform on Capitol Hill, raised over $500,000 in immediate resources for communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey and the Covid-19 pandemic, and helped launch Impact Hub Houston.

What does celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you or your family?

Hispanic Heritage, to me, represents familia, comunidad, and pride. It is acknowledging my roots and appreciating the sacrifices my family made to uproot their lives in Mexico for a better life in the United States. Recognizing all the hard work and contributions from our ancestors that have gone into shaping and building our future, breaking barriers, and rising above. If it weren’t for those that came before me, I would not be where I am today. I will forever treasure the culture and values inherited from my parents and take pride in passing them forward.

KIPP Texas predominantly serves Hispanic students and communities. To those students, what words of wisdom or advice do you have to empower them to reach their goals?

Be proud of where you came from. Never forget your ancestors. Get involved in your community. And embrace your Hispanic culture and traditions. ¡Ser latino es orgullo!

Who is your favorite Hispanic/Latine figure in history?

Mi tocaya, or namesake, Dolores Huerta

What is your heritage?

Chicana, Latina, Mexican-American

What makes you proud to be Hispanic/Latine?

It is in our DNA to overcome. I am proud to be Hispanic/Latine because we are family oriented and we go out of our way to serve others. With that, I am proud to share that I will be the first woman and first Latina to serve as Harris County Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2, Place 2.
